About Cascade
Cascade grew up beside a waterfall on the North Fork of the Maquoketa River, and the power that falling water promised for mills is what drew the first settlers and gave the town its name. One of them, sawmill owner Lyman Dillon, plowed an 86-mile furrow with a ten-ox team in 1839 to mark the route of Iowa's first military road from Dubuque toward Iowa City. Left off the main rail lines, local business people built their own narrow-gauge line to Bellevue, and from 1880 to 1936 the little train they called the Slim Princess carried freight and passengers at about twelve miles an hour. Cascade also raised Hall of Fame pitcher Red Faber, born on a nearby farm in 1888, and the Tri-County Historical Society museum keeps his story alongside a depot exhibit and a replica boxcar. Today about 2,400 people live here, the falls sit in a park right in the center of town, and a new public library opened its doors on 2nd Avenue SW in 2025.
