About Cedar Bluffs

Before there was a town, farm families near the Platte had to ford the river to sell their grain in Fremont, and more than one wagonload was lost to the current. That changed in 1886, when the Chicago & North Western Railroad came through and lots were sold off a cornfield to make a town site, named for a steep, cedar-covered bluff on the Platte a couple of miles north. Trade poured in from the surrounding farms: by 1887 some 200 people lived here when the village incorporated, and Main Street eventually counted about 40 businesses, from lumber yards by the depot to an opera house and David Yung's 1903 brick hardware store. Churches followed, among them First Presbyterian, dedicated on New Year's Day 1905, and St. Mary's Catholic Church, dedicated in 1918, and in 1959 Camp Calvin Crest opened on the bluffs above the river. Today about 615 people call Cedar Bluffs home, many driving to work in Fremont or Omaha, while Wildcats games, school concerts and the old auditorium on Main Street keep bringing neighbors together.
