About Center Point
Center Point grew from a spur of timber that reached out onto the Linn County prairie, where Bartimeas McGonigle settled in 1839 and neighbors soon called the spot McGonigle's Point. Samuel Brice and Jesse Grubbs had the village surveyed in January 1854, and that same year Lawrence Hollenbeck cleared brush to build its first house and opened the first real store at Main and Washington streets. The Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern railroad arrived in the fall of 1873, the town incorporated in 1875, and merchants rebuilt North Main after a fire that spring. In 1914 the Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northern interurban put up a Mission Revival depot that now serves as a museum and rest stop on the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, which follows the old rail bed. Today about 2,600 people call Center Point home, families cheer on the Stormin' Pointers of Center Point-Urbana, and little ones gather for Friday story time at the library on Main Street.
