About Centerville
Centerville started in 1846 as a place called Chaldea, laid out by Jonathon Stratton around an unusual square two blocks long; when the incorporation papers were filed, someone took its later name, Senterville, for a typo and "fixed" it, giving the town the spelling it has today. Coal built the town after the first mine opened in 1868, drawing families from Sweden, Italy, Croatia and Albania, and by 1912 the local miners' union was the second largest in the country. Former governor Francis M. Drake turned down a Carnegie partnership so he could give the town a library himself, and his domed, Ionic-columned Drake Public Library opened in 1903, a year before the limestone Appanoose County Courthouse with its clock tower was dedicated at the heart of the square. When the mines faded, neighbors pushed for new industry and helped bring about Rathbun Lake, which was dedicated in 1971. Every September since 1949, Pancake Day fills that big square with parades and free pancakes, and in 2021 the town set a Guinness record by serving about 14,000 of them in a single day.
