About Central City
Central City sits on the Wapsipinicon River in northeastern Linn County, a town platted in 1857 that grew up where river power and good farmland met. Local businessmen raised money and gave land in the 1880s to coax the Illinois Central Railroad through, and the first train rolled in during 1887. Two years later a fire swept the downtown, and neighbors rebuilt the blocks almost at once, many of them in brick by local builder Paul Sigmund. His buildings still line East Main Street, and the whole stretch is a National Register historic district. Just around the corner on North 4th Street, the little Prairie-style J. C. Clegg Library of 1915 now serves as a museum, while the town's Wildcats and its public library keep the community gathering today.
