About Ceresco
Ceresco's first settlers, the Andrus brothers, reached the southern edge of Saunders County in 1868 from Ceresco, Michigan, and named their prairie settlement after home, a name that also nods to Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain. A post office opened on the Ira Nelson farm in 1869, but when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad laid its tracks a mile to the east, the whole village picked up and moved to meet it in 1886. Swedish families, and later Czech ones, farmed the rich land around it, and the depot decided where the Second Street business district would grow. The village bought land for a park and ball field in 1929, and the water tower on the hill east of town has been a familiar sight since 1978. Today about 900 people call this farming village just north of Lincoln home, with a community library, a lively park and the Ceresco Days celebration each summer.
