About Chappell
Chappell began as little more than a boxcar on a Union Pacific siding, and it took its name from railroad construction engineer Charles Henry Chappell, whose crews had their supplies shipped 'out to Chappell.' The town was platted in 1884 with lots selling for $4 to $20, and by 1887 it had a new depot, a hotel, a bank and about 200 people in farm country between the North and South Platte rivers. It became Deuel County's first incorporated village in 1907 and is now its county seat, with the brick Deuel County Court House and a towering grain elevator, its name painted across the top, greeting travelers on the Lincoln Highway. Families love the Sudman-Neumann Heritage House, a 1911 home that was the first in town with electric lights and running water, along with the Chappell Memorial Library and Art Gallery, dedicated in 1936. Today about 840 people live here, fishing at Chappell Lake beside I-80, golfing along Lodgepole Creek, cheering on the Creek Valley Storm, and gathering in the school gym each December for the community Christmas celebration.
