About Chariton
Chariton's story starts in 1846, when Latter-day Saints families crossing southern Iowa on the Mormon Trace stopped at a spot called Chariton Point and built the first settler homes in what became Lucas County; a 1917 boulder on the courthouse square still marks the trail. The town was laid out in 1850 as the county seat, and its first courthouse was a small oak-log building that cost $374. The railroad made Chariton a busy wholesale and distribution hub for southern Iowa, which is why the Burlington line put up its brick freight house here in 1904, and in 1945 the young Hy-Vee grocery company moved its headquarters to town, where its main distribution center still works today. Families love the square, where the red sandstone courthouse with its turrets and tower clock has kept time since 1894, and the 1923 Hotel Charitone, which Hy-Vee helped bring back to life in 2014 with a grill downstairs and apartments above. Today about 4,200 people call Chariton home, a town known for its redbud trees and homemade candy that lights up the square each year for Dazzle Fest on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
