About Charles City
Long before settlers came, Ho-Chunk families kept a village beside the Cedar River here. In 1851 Joseph Kelly chose the spot for its river water and nearby timber, and by 1852 twenty-five more families had joined him in the town that became Charles City, seat of Floyd County. Its big chapter opened in 1897, when Charles Hart and Charles Parr set up their gasoline engine company in town; the machines they built gave the world the word "tractor," and the works employed thousands before closing in 1993. Neighbors rebuilt after the 1968 tornado that wrecked much of downtown and again after the 2008 flood, and today they cross the Cedar on the arched 1910 Main Street Bridge, catch a show behind the 1935 Art Deco front of the Charles Theatre, and paddle Iowa's first whitewater park right in the middle of town. About 7,400 people call America's Hometown home.
