About Cherokee
Cherokee was platted in 1870 on the prairie along Mill Creek, took the name of the Cherokee Nation, and became an incorporated city in the spring of 1873. When the Illinois Central came through, its depot and baggage building rose beside a brick downtown that, never leveled by a great fire, kept growing block by block, and today about 50 of those buildings make up a district on the National Register. In 1902 the state opened its fourth mental hospital on open prairie off West Main Street after Cherokee out-campaigned a string of northwest Iowa rivals, and the institution has been part of local life ever since. In 1951 W.A. and Mrs. Sanford's gift, made in memory of their son Tiel, opened the Sanford Museum and Planetarium, where admission is still free and star shows run every Sunday and Wednesday afternoon. Families also love the 1905 Carnegie library on South 2nd Street, the old iron truss bridge over Mill Creek, and a 60-member symphony that may make Cherokee the smallest town anywhere with its own orchestra. About 5,200 people call it home today, gathering for the winter jazz festival, the county fair and rodeo, and Creek Fest on the banks of Mill Creek.
