About Clarinda
Clarinda grew up in the 1850s around a public square in Page County, and local legend says it takes its name from Clarinda Buck, a girl who carried water to the men surveying the county. The founders ringed that square with an unusually wide street called the Promenade, and railroads, a mail-order seed company and the big state hospital on the north edge of town helped it grow into southwest Iowa's busy county seat. The red-brick 1887 courthouse still anchors downtown, and its clock tower stands again because the community rebuilt it after a fire in 1991. A young rural teacher here, Jessie Field, started the boys' and girls' clubs that grew into 4-H, and bandleader Glenn Miller was born in town in 1904; his birthplace home and a museum about his life welcome visitors today. The old Carnegie library is now an art museum, and each fall and winter the calendar fills with the Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree, the Craft Carnival and a lighted Christmas parade around the square.
