About Clarion
Clarion became the seat of Wright County in 1866, taking over from Liberty after the county had held its very first court sessions in a log cabin. In 1891 and 1892 the county raised a three-story courthouse with a clock tower above its many gables, and it still anchors a downtown of 19th-century storefronts. The town has a claim known well beyond Iowa: in 1907 the local school superintendent, O.H. Benson, came up with the four-leaf clover that became the 4-H emblem, and a 4-H Schoolhouse Museum now sits in the Heartland Museum complex on Highway 3. Rail brought Clarion its brick Romanesque depot in 1898, restored in 1984 as the Rock Island Depot Railroad Museum, and a public library first built in 1908 was doubled in size a century later. Today about 2,800 people live here, with Hagie sprayers made on Central Avenue, a summer Festival in the Park at Gazebo Park, and Lake Cornelia's glacier lake and trail just north of town.
