About Clarkson
Clarkson was laid out in 1886, once it was clear a new railroad line would reach the spot, and it took the name of T. S. Clarkson, a postal official who helped get its first post office going. Czech pioneers had been settling Colfax County since the 1870s, and their lodges, churches and newspapers left a deep mark here; in 1920 the Clarkson Woman's Club even published a book of old Czech recipes. In 1913 the Western Bohemian Fraternal Association built the Z.C.B.J. Opera House, which has hosted operas, dances, lectures and, from the 1930s, talking pictures, and it went on the National Register in 1988. Down Pine Street, the Clarkson Museum fills 22 rooms with more than 5,000 pieces of Czech heritage. Every June, Czech Days brings polka on the Pine Street stage, Beseda dancers, kolaches and strudel, and roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut in a church basement. About 640 people call Clarkson home today.
