About Clarksville
Clarksville began as a bet on the future: in 1853 county commissioners drove a stake in the ground for a courthouse and agreed that the village that did not yet exist would be named for the Clark family, whose wagon train had camped by the Shell Rock River the summer before. The courthouse went up in 1856, but when the county seat moved on in 1860 the town simply turned the empty building into its schoolhouse. Farmers and shopkeepers kept arriving, and the town was incorporated in 1874. Today about 1,264 people live here, with a single K-12 campus, a library, and a bike trail that leads straight into Heery Woods State Park. The Rolling Prairie Trail and the shelters at Volunteer Park keep neighbors outdoors, and the year is marked by a downtown craft expo, trick-or-treating, and the Images of Christmas evening.
