About Clay Center
Clay Center was laid out in the summer of 1879 and named for Kentucky statesman Henry Clay, and that November voters made it the Clay County seat after a hard-fought contest with Sutton and Harvard; the first building in town, a frame structure put up by W. D. Young, served as the temporary courthouse. In 1903 M. M. Johnson began building Old Trusty poultry incubators here, a factory that employed hundreds and shipped across the country, and in 1925 his company started radio station KMMJ, which made the town's name familiar in farm kitchens all over the Midwest. World War II brought a Naval Ammunition Depot just west of town in 1942, land that is now the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. Its courthouse, a Beaux Arts county citadel finished in 1919, still anchors the square, and the Clay County Museum stands on the old KMMJ site next to Heritage Park and the Old Trusty Ag Hall, home of the giant steam engine Big Allis. Each year the square fills for a Fourth of July parade and fireworks, the fairgrounds come alive for the county fair and the Old Trusty antique show in September, and Santa visits in early December.
