About Clear Lake
Long before there was a town, Dakota and Winnebago families spent their summers along this spring-fed lake, and in 1851 the Hewitt and Dickirson families pitched camp on its east shore and soon raised a cabin. A school, a steam sawmill and a hotel followed within a few years, and by 1871 the settlement had graded streets, plank sidewalks and a city charter. The lake itself became the draw: an amusement park opened at Bayside in 1909, and in 1933 the Surf Ballroom started packing the dance floor with couples. The Surf is where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper played their final show in February 1959, and the rebuilt 1948 ballroom, now a National Historic Landmark, still hosts concerts and a winter tribute every year. Today about 7,700 people call Clear Lake home, strolling the lakeside walkway, riding the Lady of the Lake sternwheeler and catching a movie at the Lake Theatre, a former opera house downtown.
