About Colfax
Colfax was platted in 1866 as a stagecoach and railroad stop on the bluffs above the South Skunk River, and took its name from Schuyler Colfax, Ulysses S. Grant's vice president. Everything changed in 1875, when men drilling for coal struck artesian mineral water: within a few years the 'Spring City' had nine spa hotels, four bottling works and thousands of visitors a year, while coal mines north and southeast of town kept hundreds of miners at work. The grandest of the hotels, Hotel Colfax, logged 13,000 guests in 1900 and even ran its own depot, trolley and little golf course. The spa trade faded with the Great Depression, but in 1933 volunteers built the brick fountain-house gazebo in Mineral Springs Park to remember it, and it still greets everyone driving into downtown. Today about 2,255 people live in Colfax, borrowing books in the 1913 Carnegie library, paddling and watching ospreys at Quarry Springs Park, and cheering on the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks.
