About Columbus Junction
Columbus Junction grew up where two railroads crossed: the Rock Island laid its east-west track through the area in 1858, and when the north-south Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Minnesota line met it in 1870, a boarding house and restaurant opened the very next day and the town was platted a month later, on March 12. Sitting where the Iowa and Cedar rivers come together, it incorporated in 1874 and put up a two-story brick schoolhouse on East Maple Street in 1882; that building later held the town's first library room and today houses the Columbus Community Heritage Museum. The beloved Swinging Bridge, a 262-foot steel-cable and wood footbridge built in 1922 to link Third and Fourth streets, still sways over the ravine in Swinging Bridge Park, where the library sets out a Storybook Adventure along Possum Hollow Trail each summer. Meatpacking jobs drew newcomers from the 1960s on, and today Latino families and refugees from Myanmar's Chin State are a big part of the town, with the library offering citizenship classes in Spanish. Today about 1,830 people live here, the Columbus Wildcats play in royal blue and white, and the library, city hall and police share the Civic Center on Second Street that opened in 2006.
