About Coon Rapids
Coon Rapids began in 1864 when two Carrollton men bought land on the Middle Raccoon River and put up a saw and grist mill, and a post office and stagecoach stop soon followed. When the Chicago, St. Paul and Milwaukee railroad was laid out half a mile away in the 1880s, merchants hauled their buildings over to the new town and Main Street filled with brick storefronts. A tornado flattened the eastern side of town in 1886 and fires plagued the wooden blocks for years, yet the town rebuilt each time and became the trading center between Perry and Manning. In the twentieth century Garst and Thomas Seed made it famous for hybrid seed corn, and in 1959 Roswell Garst welcomed Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev to his farm just south of town. Today the Garst farmstead is on the National Register and anchors Whiterock Conservancy's miles of trails, and about 1,300 neighbors still call Coon Rapids home.
