About Corning
Long before there was a Corning, French-speaking Icarians came west from Nauvoo in the 1850s and built a shared-living colony on the prairie nearby, one that outlasted every other Icarian settlement in America. The town itself arrived with the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad in August 1869, took the name of railroad investor Erastus Corning, incorporated in 1871, and a year later won the county seat away from Quincy. Merchants filled Davis Avenue with brick storefronts, and in 1902 Frederick Reese raised a yellow-brick opera house on the corner across from Central Park, where neighbors spent years of bake sales and soup suppers bringing it back to life before its 2012 reopening. Corning is also where Johnny Carson was born, and his small white childhood home still welcomes visitors. Today about 1,560 people call this Adams County seat home, with Lake Icaria just north of town, the Timberwolves of Southwest Valley on Friday nights, Lazy Days of Summer every July, and the French Heritage festival each June.
