About Cortland

Cortland began in 1884 when the Omaha & Republican Valley railroad was pushed from Lincoln toward Beatrice; J. H. Millard platted a corn field into 25 blocks and the first lot sold on February 4. It was first called Galesburg after the landowner, then renamed for Cortland, New York, since too many towns shared the first name. Within months dozens of buildings rose along Fourth Street near the depot, and grain and livestock wagons sometimes lined up overnight at the elevators. The 1883 Rohe Building, once an Odd Fellows hall, a millinery, a photo studio and the Isis Theatre, is now the Cortland Museum, reopened in October 2023 by neighbors who rescued its collection. Today the village of about 500 sits on U.S. 77 between Lincoln and Beatrice, and the Cortland Improvement Association keeps Spookfest, the tree lighting and the holiday lighting contest going.
