About Corydon
Corydon was laid out in 1851 on a spot a committee chose because it sat just northeast of the exact middle of Wayne County, and it became the county seat that same year. The city says the founders could not agree on a name, so they settled it with a game of poker and the winner, Judge Seth Anderson, named it for his hometown of Corydon, Indiana. The Burlington line arrived in 1879 and a second railroad followed in 1911-12, feeding the shops and businesses that gathered around the courthouse square. Today the square still holds the courthouse, the Bill Gode Memorial Bandstand for free Thursday concerts, the Wayne Theatre and the old Hotel Rea, built in 1898 and listed on the National Register in 2020. Families head to Corydon Lake Park for fishing, camping and disc golf, and in August the Old Settlers celebration, first held in 1885, still brings the county together. About 1,500 people call Corydon home.
