About Crawford
Crawford sprang up as a tent city in 1886, when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad pushed west toward Fort Robinson and crossed William Annin's tree claim on the White River; the new town took the name of Captain Emmet Crawford, who had served at the fort. Short of signatures to incorporate that first summer, its founders filled out the petition with willing soldiers from the fort, and for years the garrison kept the young town lively and busy. A second railroad, the Burlington, arrived in 1889 through Nebraska's only railway tunnel at nearby Belmont, and by 1910 Crawford counted more than 2,500 people and some of the busiest stores in the state. Downtown still shows that boom: the 1887 Adams Block, now home to the Crawford Historical Museum, the 1909 concrete Co-op Block, and a 1939 brick post office whose lobby mural shows a wagon train fording a stream beneath Crow Butte. Today about 840 people live between Legend Buttes and Crow Butte, gateway to Fort Robinson State Park and Toadstool Geologic Park, with a summer PRCA rodeo, a fiddle contest and a Rock Swap on the calendar.
