About Creighton
Creighton grew out of the Bruce Colony, a settlement started on the Knox County prairie in 1871, and most likely takes its name from the Creighton family of Omaha. In the early years settlers hauled in supplies by wagon from Yankton or West Point, often in winter so they could cross the rivers on the ice, and the railroad's arrival in 1881 made the town's future certain. After an 1889 fire wiped out a whole block of the business district, residents piped water from Bazile Creek into a wooden tower for firefighting, and in 1894 they formed a volunteer fire department that still serves the town. The municipal hall built in 1916 still holds city offices and community gatherings, and in 1953 local families built the hospital that remains the only one in Knox County. Today about 1,150 people live here along a Main Street that runs a full mile, and they cheer on the Creighton Bulldogs together.
