About Crete
Crete grew up on the east bank of the Big Blue River, where Jesse and Elizabeth Bickle built a log cabin in 1863 that became the first post office; in 1871 their Blue River City joined the railroad's new town under the name Crete, which also kept the line's alphabetical order of stations. A year later the railroad gave land for a college, and Doane has grown up alongside the town ever since. In the 1880s Crete's summer Chautauqua became the second largest in the country, and today the old grounds at Tuxedo Park host campers, ballgames and the Saline County Fair. Downtown, where several brick buildings still carry the year 1888, the calendar runs from Cinco de Mayo in City Park to the Great Pumpkin Festival at 12th and Main.
