About Crofton
Crofton was platted in 1892 on the rolling hills of northeast Knox County and borrowed its name from Crofton Court, an English estate that had belonged to a railroad promoter. Fires twice swept away half-blocks of the young downtown, so when grocer and butcher John Schwartz rebuilt in 1918 he made his Main Street store of brick and concrete, complete with a basement smokehouse and a steam whistle that told the town when the ham was ready; today it holds the Crofton Haymarket and its museum of antique hay pulleys. The brick Argo Hotel went up in 1912 and later served as a health clinic, and in 1953 St. Rose of Lima parish raised a tan brick church with a great rose window, both now on the National Register. The building of Gavins Point Dam in the 1950s created Lewis and Clark Lake just to the north, bringing boaters, campers and anglers to Crofton's doorstep. These days about 750 neighbors gather for Cruisin' Days and Grill Fest, the kayak-run-bike Dam Race, bingo at the senior center and Warriors games, and they line Southside City Park with more than 200 flags for fallen veterans each Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day.
