About Culbertson
Culbertson was founded in 1873 and served as the first county seat of Hitchcock County, named for Alexander Culbertson, an Indian agent. The village incorporated in 1885, and by 1890 it had grown from about 100 neighbors to more than 450, reaching its peak of 820 in 1930. Taylor Avenue is still the downtown spine, a short street of red brick storefronts and a tall peach-colored bank building, with a water tower on the skyline. The Culbertson Public Library on Wyoming Street opens four afternoons a week and runs a summer reading program with a new theme each year. Kids attend Culbertson Elementary, part of Hitchcock County Schools, where the Falcons share a calendar with Trenton. About 534 people call it home today, out on the Republican River country near the Kansas line.
