About Curtis
Curtis grew up with the railroad: the Burlington's High-Line between Holdrege and Sterling reached the Medicine Creek Valley in October 1885, and the town, named for a trapper who once worked the area, was founded the next August. It became a freight division point with a roundhouse and machine shop, and railroad crews and the trade they brought filled its streets. In 1911 the state picked Curtis over eleven other towns for its new School of Agriculture, and Agricultural Hall, finished in 1913, still houses the offices of today's Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, where students train in vet tech, agribusiness and welding. Curtis calls itself Nebraska's Easter City for the Palm Sunday pageant volunteers have staged for more than six decades, and every December Hometown Christmas brings hayrack rides, cocoa in the shops and Santa on the fire truck. Today about 800 people live here, catching Friday-night movies at the Star Theatre, browsing the Hansen Memorial Museum and cheering on the Medicine Valley Raiders, and they will tell you their tap water was once judged the best-tasting in the nation.
