About Dallas Center
Dallas Center took shape in 1869, when the railroad was laid across this stretch of Dallas County prairie and a town grew up beside the tracks; it borrows its name from George M. Dallas, a vice president of the United States. By March 1880 the settlement had enough people to incorporate as a city, and an 1875 county atlas already shows its first blocks platted around the line. Families today know it by its two big parks: Mound Park on the west side, with its gazebo, sand volleyball and a summer roller rink, and Memorial Park on the east, with open lawn for kites and a nine-hole disc golf course. Since 2009 the paved north loop of the Raccoon River Valley Trail has run through town, with a shaded trailhead at 14th and Walnut that brings cyclists right to the business district. Home to about 1,900 people at the 2020 census and only twenty miles from Des Moines, the town calls itself "Quietly Progressive", and neighbors fill Walnut Street each year for the Fall Festival, Halloween Hayday and Hometown Christmas.
