About Davenport

Davenport was founded on May 14, 1836, by Antoine Le Claire, who named it for his friend Colonel George Davenport. It sits on the Mississippi River at a spot where the river runs east to west, and it is the largest of the Quad Cities. In 1856 the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi joined Davenport to Rock Island, and the town grew into a busy rail hub. It is known as the hometown of jazz cornet player Bix Beiderbecke and as the place where Palmer College gave the world's first chiropractic adjustment. Today families walk the riverfront, cross the lit-up Skybridge, catch summer shows in LeClaire Park, and come out each July for the Bix 7 race.
