This week in David City
About David City
David City began as a stretch of open prairie that Butler County voters, after four years and four elections, chose in 1873 as a more central home for their courthouse than Savannah on the Platte. By the city's own account, the town is named for William Davids, father of Phoebe Davids Miles, who gave the land for the courthouse, and it is the only David City in the world. Neighbors still gather downtown at Thorpe's Opera House, built in 1889, and in the hometown of rural painter Dale Nichols they keep the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art. Every July the Butler County Fair fills the fairgrounds with 4-H shows, a polka dance and the Czech Club food stand.
