About DeWitt
DeWitt was laid out in 1836 on the rolling prairie of Clinton County, first under the name Vandenburg before it took the name of New York governor DeWitt Clinton, the same man the county honors. A small settlement and a log courthouse were up by 1841, and by the winter of 1866 the town could draw Ralph Waldo Emerson to give a lyceum talk. Railroads did much of the building after that: the Chicago and North Western ran along the south edge and the Milwaukee Road came down 7th Avenue, where a few old loading docks and elevator sheds still hint at that busy era. Today people know DeWitt for its brick downtown on Sixth Avenue, the tall green spire of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the red-brick City Hall on Ninth Street. It is the fastest growing city in the county, home to about 5,500 people, the Central DeWitt Sabers and a library that keeps a full calendar of storytimes, chess, crafts and game nights.
