About Decatur
Decatur sits at the foot of a bluff beside the Missouri River, and it began in 1854 when fur traders Peter Sarpy and Clement Lambert built log houses at the mouth of Wood Creek to do business with the Omaha. The town hoped to be the place the transcontinental railroad crossed the river, and when Council Bluffs won that role instead, it reinvented itself, floating cottonwood ties downriver and running ferries and riverboats from its landing. A postcard once showed a streetcar on Main Street that never existed; in 2015 neighbors made the joke real, and a trolley now sits in Trolley Park. The Decatur-Onawa Bridge opened in the 1950s after the river wandered off and left a famous bridge to nowhere. Each June, over Father's Day weekend, the whole village turns out for Riverfront Days with a parade, a boat-in breakfast, and a fish fry.
