About Deshler
Deshler began in 1887, when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad pushed its line across Thayer County and a town grew up at the new stop, named for John G. Deshler, who owned the town site. Lutheran congregations shaped it from the start: St. Peter's Lutheran School opened in 1889, and in 1966 three country and town congregations joined to run Deshler Lutheran School together. The town was once home to the world's largest broom factory, and today it is home to a world leader in irrigation systems, along with the shops on its red-brick 4th Street, where Centennial Hall and an old striped barber pole still greet visitors. Families fill the 10-acre city park, with its walking trail, picnic shelters, sand volleyball, free overnight camping and the Rattlesnake Run disc golf course, and the Jennifer Reinke Public Library keeps a meeting room open to all. About 750 people live here, cheering on the purple-and-gold Deshler Dragons and turning out for chamber traditions like Deshler Daze, the Hibernation Hustle winter run and Hit the Brix.
