About Dodge
Talk of a railroad coming up the valley between the Elkhorn and Platte rivers drew German, Czech and Polish families to these hills, and a country post office called Dodge, kept by Anton Bartosh from 1872, gave the place its name. When the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad followed South Pebble Creek through in 1886, the town was platted on August 10 and became a village the next year. In September 1895 a fire swept away the whole business district, and the people of Dodge simply built it again; brick storefronts still line the main street. Faith and school have anchored the town ever since, with St. Wenceslaus parish and its Catholic grade school, opened in 1911, a few blocks from downtown. Today about 600 neighbors share a red-brick street that runs up to the water tower, Dodge Park with its pool and ball diamonds, the Robin's Nest Garden of Hope and a new Veterans Memorial Park, and Friday nights cheering the Howells-Dodge Jaguars.
