About Doniphan
Doniphan grew up on level prairie south of the Platte in 1879, when the St. Joseph and Grand Island railroad needed a stop halfway between Hastings and Grand Island and rancher W. J. Burger, who owned the land, laid out the first lots. The town took the name of Col. John Doniphan, the railroad's attorney from St. Joseph, Missouri; the Upson brothers opened the first store on Plum Street that August, and Miss Emma Smith taught the first school term that fall. Burger's flour mill on the public square began grinding in 1881, the same spring Charles Kelsey started the Index newspaper, and in January 1884 thirty-three taxpayers petitioned to make Doniphan a village. When a November 1887 fire, set off by burglars blasting at the bank safe, swept one side of Main Street, neighbors rebuilt with newer buildings, and the brick storefronts of West Main still anchor downtown. Today about 800 people live here, and the town fills the stands for the Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals, from Friday-night football to the winter band and choir concert.
