About Dorchester
Dorchester began in 1870, when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad reached this stretch of Saline County prairie and a town was platted beside the tracks. Its name most likely fits the railroad's alphabet of stops heading west from Lincoln (Berks, Crete, Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont), borrowed from Dorchester, Massachusetts, or from the English town that city was named for. A depot went up in 1872, and the village was established as a community in 1881. In the 1950s Rosa Dusanek dreamed of a county museum, and today the Saline County Historical Museum on Highway 33 gathers that old depot, a log cabin, a sod-house-turned-schoolhouse and a wooden windmill on its grounds. About 600 people live here now, under a tall water tower and the grain elevators, cheering on the Longhorns at Nerud Field and turning out for church suppers, Table or Treat and a community loin feed at the Legion.
