About Duncan
Duncan began as a railroad stop on the Union Pacific line that reached the Platte valley in 1866, first as the Cherry Hill post office and then as the townsite of Jackson, laid out in 1871. Polish and Swiss immigrants were among the first families, and the Polish Catholics raised St. Stanislaus Church in 1882, the town's steeple on the skyline ever since. In 1880 the name changed to Duncan to honor General Wood B. Duncan, since another Jackson already existed in Nebraska. The village sits between the Loup and Platte rivers on old U.S. Route 30, the Lincoln Highway, eight miles west of Columbus, and it became a village in 1913. About 390 neighbors live here now, with a little main street along 8th Street and parks, a Pulaski Hall, and Boys Town day school close at hand.
