About Durant
Durant started out in 1854 as Brayton, a plat laid out by Benjamin Brayton in what is now a city reaching into Cedar, Muscatine and Scott counties, and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific tracks reached it the very next year. The town soon took the name of railroad builder Thomas C. Durant, who paid for most of its first public school. The railroad shaped early life in a direct way: in 1856 the first Episcopal services were held inside the Rock Island depot, with champagne crates standing in for the altar and pews. That congregation grew into St. Paul's Episcopal Church, whose building, put up by the Congregationalists in 1856 and bought by the parish in 1895, and its 1895 parish hall, once also the town library and community center, are on the National Register of Historic Places. Today Durant is a town of about 1,900 people with a Fifth Street business block, a Scott County branch library and a single connected campus where the Durant Wildcats go to school.
