About Dyersville
Dyersville was platted in 1851 on the North Fork of the Maquoketa River and took its name from James Dyer, an English settler who later opened a hotel here. The railroad reached town in 1857, setting off a burst of building that left behind landmarks like the brick Allen House, and German Catholic families soon made the place their own. Their parish raised the twin-spired Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in 1889, and its 212-foot steeples still guide pilots and drivers across the farm country. Farm toys became a hometown trade too, with Ertl based here and the National Farm Toy Museum drawing collectors to its June and November toy shows since 1986. Out past the cornfields, the ballfield built for the 1989 movie Field of Dreams still welcomes anyone who wants to play catch, and it has hosted Major League games. Today about 4,500 people call Dyersville home, a town that straddles Dubuque and Delaware counties.
