About Dysart
Dysart began in 1872, when the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway pushed through Tama County and a town was platted along the line. It carries the name of Joseph Dysart, the farmer who helped found it. Over the next century the town grew steadily to a little over a thousand neighbors, and in 1966 its school merged with Geneseo's before joining La Porte City's students in 1989. The library on Main Street is the town's living room: started by the Legion Auxiliary in 1931, it moved from the Legion Hall to the Community Building to the old fire station, and in 2003 settled into a bright new building named for its biggest benefactor, Norma Anders. Today about 1,280 people call Dysart home, and the Union Community middle school keeps young people coming through town every day.
