About Eagle Grove
Eagle Grove takes its name from a huge eagles' nest that early settlers spotted in an oak grove high on the bank of the Boone River, where N. B. Paine had built a log cabin in 1851. The town itself was platted in 1881, trains of the Chicago and North Western once pulled out of its depot, and by 1903 its people had a brick Carnegie library on West Broadway, with a round entrance pavilion and Ionic columns, that now serves as the Eagle Grove Historical Museum. Families spend summer days at Greenwood Park, with its aquatic center, skate park and ball diamonds next to the Wright County Fairgrounds, and anyone can stop at Flowing Well Park for a drink of fresh well water under the little gazebo. Hometown pride runs through Robert Blue Middle School, named for the local attorney who became Iowa's 30th governor, and through a high school building now marking 100 years. Today Eagle Grove is the largest city in Wright County, home to 3,601 people at the 2020 census, with the Boone River Greenbelt and the Three Rivers Trail close by for paddling, biking and wildlife watching.
