About Eagle
Eagle's name came first: when settler Sam Prouty opened a post office in his farmhouse in 1869, he named it for a big bird he had shot that may well have been an eagle. The town followed in 1886, when the Missouri Pacific built its line between Weeping Water and Lincoln, Sam McClintic sold a quarter section for a townsite, and Sam English opened one of the first general stores before the tracks were even graded. German families farming to the west and English families to the east filled the churches, the opera house built in 1892 hosted dances and, later, ten-cent picture shows, and the village incorporated on August 11, 1891. The trains are gone now, but the old rail bed lives on as the MoPac Trail, and a tall grain elevator still stands over the little brick and stucco storefronts on Fourth Street. Today about 1,065 neighbors send their kids to Eagle Elementary, swim at the village pool in summer, and turn out for Painting Pumpkins in the Park and the Trunk or Treat each October.
