About Earlham
Earlham began with David Hockett, who drove an ox team west from eastern Iowa in 1865 with his wife Mary Jane and three children and settled 200 acres. When the Rock Island railroad wanted a line through, he deeded it a strip and sold a third of his land for a townsite, and Earlham was incorporated in April 1870, named for a Quaker college in Indiana. His 1860s farmhouse and the limestone schoolhouse built around 1872 are now small museums, free to visit on Sunday afternoons. The Bricker-Price Block, a 1900 Romanesque Revival storefront building that lost its roof in a 2015 storm, was rebuilt by neighbors and listed on the National Register in 2017. Today about 1,400 people live here, thirty miles west of Des Moines just off Interstate 80, with one school campus for the Cardinals and a library that runs story times twice a week.
