About Edgar
Edgar began as a railroad stop in south-central Nebraska: a post office opened in 1872 and the town was platted in 1873 when the line was extended there. It carries the name of a pioneer settler's son. The city's own website calls it the pride of the Plains and points visitors to the Oregon Trail, downtown shops, homemade pie and a turn-of-the-century hotel that was built in 1894 and renovated. Families gather in parks like Centennial and South Park, where a WPA-built rock shelter has stood since 1937. Children attend Sandy Creek Public Schools, a district formed by consolidation in 1966 that serves four communities. About 428 people lived in Edgar at the 2020 census.
