About Eldora
Eldora was laid out in 1853 on the eastern lip of the Altmont Moraine, just above the gorge the Iowa River has cut through sandstone, and a local mother gave the town its name in memory of her baby daughter. As the Hardin County seat it grew around a public square, and in 1892 the county opened a Romanesque Revival courthouse of pressed brick and pink Kasota stone whose 128-foot bell tower still rises over downtown. Two years later the congregation of First Congregational Church finished its hammer-dressed limestone church a few steps away, and today both anchor an Eldora Downtown Historic District of 65 contributing buildings, mostly brick storefronts from the 1890s onward. Just northeast of town, Pine Lake State Park wraps two lakes in white pines, with stone-and-timber cabins built by the CCC and WPA in the 1930s and more than ten miles of trails. Eldora is home to about 2,700 people, the South Hardin Tigers, and a Welcome Center and Railroad Museum on Park Street with an old caboose out front, and the town still remembers that the last scenes of the 1996 movie Twister were filmed here.
