About Elgin
Elgin was laid out on June 20, 1887, when the railroad reached this corner of Antelope County, and its name came by chance: someone picked a spot in a postal guide and landed on Elgin, Illinois. A weekly paper, The Elgin Review, started in 1897, a waterworks came in 1909, and from 1911 new buildings in the business blocks had to be brick, stone or other fireproof material; 2nd Street, which carries Highway 14 through town, is still lined with brick storefronts such as the Bank of Elgin building at the corner of Pine. St. Boniface parish voted in 1912 to build a new church, the town founded its public library in 1931, and Val Peterson, once superintendent of the Elgin schools, became governor of Nebraska in 1946. The pool opened in 1960, work on Pope John XXIII Central Catholic began in 1966, and the village became the City of Elgin in 1977. Today about 720 people live here; they keep up Centennial Gardens beside the library with Herb Mignery's 'Prairie Fire' statue, cheer for the Wolfpack that the public and Catholic schools have shared since 2009, and can point out the cemeteries where scenes of the 2012 film 'Nebraska' were shot.
