About Elkader
Elkader began on the banks of the Turkey River in Pony Hollow, where Elisha Boardman and Horace Bronson put up cabins in 1836, and the town was platted in 1846. Its founders named it for Abd el-Kader, an Algerian leader they admired, and that surprising link is still celebrated through a sister-city bond with Mascara, Algeria. A flour mill gave the village its first business, and after a few tugs of war with neighboring towns it settled in as the Clayton County seat for good in 1868. Limestone from the local bluffs shaped the place: the twin-arched Keystone Bridge over the river, begun in 1888, is the postcard everyone shares. Downtown still has its 1903 Opera House with a three-story brick front, a National Register historic district, and shops a short walk from the water. Today it is a river town of about 1,200 where you can paddle, hike the Pony Hollow Trail, catch a show, and be home for supper.
