About Elm Creek
Elm Creek takes its name from a Union Pacific work crew: in August 1866, laying track across Buffalo County, they built a siding for water and wood beside a creek lined with red elms and named both after the trees. In the early 1880s the railroad moved its depot a mile east to the present townsite, and by the time the village incorporated in January 1887 its 300 people had three hotels, a flour mill, five general stores and a newspaper. When fire swept through fourteen wooden buildings on July 1, 1906, merchants rebuilt in stone with pressed-brick fronts, and the next year the village put in a waterworks and organized a volunteer fire department. Trains still run along the Union Pacific main line past the alfalfa mill and grain elevators, where U.S. 30 meets U.S. 183 two miles from Interstate 80. About 980 people live here today, and on the last weekend of August Buffalo Stampede Days brings people home for a parade, outhouse races, a car show and a big street dance.
