About Elmwood
Elmwood takes its name from a grove of old elms: the area's first post office opened in 1868 in David McCaig's log cabin among those trees, with mail carried out by horse and buggy from Ashland or Plattsmouth. Eli Lane opened a store on the present townsite in 1872, and the village was founded in 1886 in southeast Cass County. Its old-timers long told of the blizzard of January 12, 1888, when the temperature fell some 80 degrees in half a day and yet no one in the community was lost. In 1909 Bess Streeter Aldrich came to Elmwood with her family when they helped buy the American Exchange Bank, and the town became the model for many of her stories of prairie life; the Prairie School house she built in 1922, The Elms on East F Street, is now a museum and on the National Register. Today about 650 people live here, shop along 4th Street, cheer for the Elmwood-Murdock Knights, and gather each Thursday morning for preschool story time at the library.
